I remember when, on holiday in Portugal, aged 12, I heard a scuttling sound in my bedroom in our apartment. I looked under the bed and saw a very big cockroach. I whacked it with a flip flop, and when I moved the flip flop, it just deployed it's legs and kept going, probably muttering "gotta try harder than that, English bastard" in Portuguese 😳🤣

My maternal grandfather was the king of car overpacking. He and my grandmother were Francophiles and drove first an R5 then a Renault 18i….Very unusual choices in the USA. On one trip from FL to NC, leaving pre-dawn, he had packed the trunk of the 18 so tightly that the harness for the rear lighting had become dislodged. Now, He was a child of the great depression and could always mend and make do. In his struggle to remedy the failure he was able to access the bulb for the pass. Side rear marker light (USA spec) which was still working. Solution: remove it and jamb it into the socket for the pass. tail light. Off we went into the dark morning with 1 working light in the back of the car. He was also a famously bad driver who would let the car drift to the right before jerking it back on course with a quick jab left on the steering wheel….over and over again proceeding down a straight road. This was not such a problem in his big ‘72 Buick LeSabre as the car was so wollowy and the steering so slow that it just sort of squirmed along gently pitching and rolling. In the relatively tight steering yet softly sprung Renault, however, it bordered on inducing neck trauma. He also often went for overly aggressive downshifts whilst descending hills that threatened to zing the valves right through the hood of the car and forced passengers hard against the seatbelts. Bless him. I do miss him so. Thanks for the memories guys.

Ironically the move to touchscreens in cars was preceded in aircraft - so called glass cockpits in civil aviation like Garmin G1000 etc in the early noughties and multifunction displays in fighter jets like the F-15 and 18 and 16s. Presumably though important functions in a SAAB would also migrate to the steering wheel as a nod to HOTAS in fighters. Maybe 70s and 80s SAABs should have come with a 'manattino' style wheel a la the rotary dial for weapons and radar selection on the Viggen. I'm a massive pedant. Hope you don't hate me, I loved Steel Flies. Also omg I just got the pun in Steel Flies.

My brother sadly passed away last year at 58 because of damaged lungs and one of the probable causes is that he used to dismantle old garages for people in his youth and it may have been all the asbestos that damaged his lungs long term, so the danger is real. Be careful out there!

Going back to teachers... back in the mid 90s our Chemistry teacher Mrs Allen (also known as chicken legs) used to get dropped off by her husband, who was a teacher at the nearby college, in a beautiful bright red L reg Lancia Delta Integrale. I was always fascinated by the left hand drive. Fast forward a couple of years and I'm now at the college and Mr Allen has swapped his Lancia for a silver P plate Impreza WRX which I also fell in love with. Also I must add Mr and Mrs Allen were in their late 50s early 60s at the time so huuuge respect to Mr Allen and his cars!!

Just listened to this epidsod on the way back from the dentist of all things...and I have to go back for a filling: so much for 6 monthly visits. Teachers cars. Maths teachers in the early half of the 70's. One had a Citroen D Super 5, the other an E Type SII hardtop (and a VW bay window camper). The lads (us 14 year olds) all fancied the E Type apart from me. It took me 15 years to get a D Super 5 (still have it, still can't do maths). Today, my wife invigilates at a local secondary. The C63 AMG (full fat 6.2 with Performance Pack) stirs some kids attention - much more so than her EV - so there is still hope...

I know I'm a week late but: the rule about LMH-vs-GT3 is that Manufacturers with existing Hypercar programmes were given priority for entering cars into the newly-instated GT3 class (replacing LM-GTE). Not the other way around. As for Cadillac, you could level the same questioning at Peugeot; none of its cars use a V6 anymore but the 9X8 does. Also, Mercedes is in F1 despite making realy heavy luxury cars. I think they just use Cadillac as it's GM's flagship brand and it spices up their image.
